Day 8 · Evening Devotional

Watching and Praying

Scripture

"Watch and pray, that you don't enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." — Matthew 26:41 (WEB)

Teaching

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked His disciples to watch and pray with Him. They couldn't even stay awake for one hour. His gentle observation is deeply relevant: "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." This is especially true during fasting. Your spirit wants to press deeper into God, but your body protests. The evening hours can be particularly challenging — tiredness, hunger, and distraction all compete for your attention. But this is your moment to prove your spirit stronger than your flesh. A few minutes of focused evening prayer can anchor your soul for the night and position you for the next day.
Reflection

Where have you felt the tension between willing spirit and weak flesh this week? How can evening prayer help?

Prayer

Lord, I watch and pray with You tonight. My spirit is willing even when my flesh is weak. Strengthen me. Guard me from temptation. Let my evening prayer be a sweet offering before You. Amen.

✦ Declaration

I watch and pray. My spirit is willing and growing stronger. I will not give in to the weakness of the flesh. God's strength sustains me.
