Day 8 · Morning Devotional

The Fasting that God Chooses

Scripture

"Isn't this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Isn't it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?" — Isaiah 58:6-7 (WEB)

Teaching

God is concerned not just with the act of fasting but with the heart behind it. In Isaiah 58, Israel was fasting while simultaneously exploiting their workers and fighting with each other. God said: "This is not the fast I have chosen." The fast God desires goes beyond personal devotion — it reaches outward. It breaks yokes of oppression, feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, and clothes the naked. It is a fast that combines intimacy with God and compassion for people. As you fast, let God expand your heart for others. Ask Him to show you who needs encouragement, help, or a kind word today. True fasting transforms not only the one who fasts but also the world around them.
Reflection

How can your fast extend beyond personal spiritual growth to serve others? Who around you needs the compassion of Christ today?

Prayer

Lord, let my fast be pleasing to You. Open my eyes to the needs around me. Give me a heart that breaks for what breaks Yours. Let this fast produce both personal transformation and compassion for others. Amen.

✦ Declaration

My fast is pleasing to God. It breaks yokes, releases captives, and brings light into darkness. My fasting blesses others as it draws me closer to God.
